Paul Jouve – Lion and Two Panthers, Sketch

This drawing by Paul Jouve demonstrates the extraordinary freedom of his hand when capturing animal power. Executed in ink and charcoal, the artist renders with rapid, vigorous strokes a monumental lion, accompanied by two panthers, their stylized silhouettes leaping from the paper with dramatic intensity.

Renowned for the academic precision of his large-scale works, Jouve reveals here another facet of his talent: the spontaneity and suggestive force of the animal sketch. Each line, seemingly improvised, contributes to expressing the movement, suppleness, and vital energy of these big cats.

Recognized as one of the greatest French animal artists of the 20th century, Paul Jouve established himself at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle as a master of the modern bestiary. His lions, tigers, and panthers brought him international acclaim, both in his paintings and in his drawings and prints.
