Paul Jouve – Reclining Lion

This drawing by Paul Jouve illustrates the artist’s exceptional mastery in the representation of the animal kingdom. The lion, a recurring figure in his work, is captured here in a resting posture, yet its latent power emerges through the precision of the line and the vigorous modeling of its musculature.

Jouve, regarded as one of the greatest French animal artists of the 20th century, combines the rigor of academic drawing with a modern stylization. The bold ink outlines and touches of color convey both the nobility and the strength of the animal.

Since his acclaimed debut at the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris, Paul Jouve established himself as a master of the modern bestiary, illustrating some of the finest bibliophile works. His lions, tigers, and panthers were among his favorite subjects and earned him international recognition.
