For the first time in its history, the Alexis Pentcheff Gallery is honored to participate in the Salon du Dessin, which is regularly held in Paris at the Palais Brongniart. The 2023 edition will be the thirtieth of this event, initiated in 1991 at the Hotel Georges V. Over time, the Salon du Dessin has expanded and provided an enriched cultural program, allowing enthusiasts and museum curators from around the world to complete their journey by visits dedicated to the theme of drawing. This is the Drawing Week, which has been held in Parisian museums since 1999, at the initiative of the Salon's organizers.
Works on paper: inks, pastels, watercolors... from Édouard Vuillard to Paul Jouve
This internationally renowned event, a reference in the art world, is an opportunity for the gallery to present the most beautiful works on paper from its collections. This first year, about sixty drawings will be exhibited by the gallery in its stand. Among them, an exceptional series of about twenty drawings by Édouard Vuillard. This master of intimacy gives us an appointment, in flowered living rooms, at the foot of a fireplace or in the secret of a bedroom. On a few square centimeters, he manages to sketch touching family or friendly scenes, resurrecting for us those precious lost moments of the last century. From the 19th century interiors of Édouard Vuillard, we will travel to the animal world with beautiful drawings by Paul Jouve and Gaston Suisse. The gallery will also show unpublished preparatory works by René Gruau, the well-known fashion designer whose studio collection the gallery acquired several years ago, as well as works by other artists of the early 20th century that it particularly likes. Among these exceptional pieces, a preparatory drawing by Maurice Denis executed for the frieze of the dome of the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in 1912 will give us the opportunity to admire the graceful body of the ballerina Nadia Trouhanova in a nude figure from the back executed with delicacy and sensuality. To participate in the Salon du Dessin is also to approach the history of art and the works in a new way, it is to grasp the intimate and fragile side of the representation on paper, which seems to link us to the artist more directly than a canvas, in the sense that the paper collects the first gesture of the artist, his first intention.
