Merveilles de l'orientalisme
Marseille Porte de l'Orient: Orientalist painting in the spotlight at the Regards de Provence museum
From May 18 to December 31, 2016, the Regards de Provence Museum honors Orientalism through the eyes of Provencal, Italian, Spanish and Algerian artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. Beauty and mystery of historical, religious and exotic scenes from a real or phantasied Orient are brought to light through nearly eighty paintings and sculptures, from the collection of the Regards de Provence Foundation, Museums and private collections.
Bompard, Brest, Chabaud, Clavère, Corrodi, Courdouan, Crapelet, Huguet, Lazergues, Le Gac, Loubon, Pascal, Philipoteaux, Rochegrosse, Silbert, Washington, Ziem and many others paint Stamboul, Cairo, Algiers, the banks of the Nile and the pyramids, the Saharan desert, its mysterious caravans, its wells, its wadis and its mirages, and so many other mythical places of this oriental world. From the Nubian guards at the noble port to the fishermen in their feluccas on the banks of the Nile, from the luxuriously dressed women lying in their homes to the musicians and dancers in the Sultan's harem, from the bazaars and merchants of carpets and works of art to the markets teeming with people busy and happy, are all invitations to escape and change of scenery.
