In this work, Bernard Buffet displays his immediately recognizable style: a tense drawing of incisive black lines, structuring the composition with an almost architectural rigor. The artist invites us into the intimacy of his property at La Baume, where he lived and worked for many years.
Beneath an archway opening onto a luxuriant garden, a greenhouse aligns pots and jars filled with vegetation. The interior space extends into the exterior landscape, creating an interplay between cultivated nature and untamed nature. The verticality of the plants, standing like silhouettes, reinforces the solemn atmosphere emanating from the scene.
In 1997, the year of this composition, Bernard Buffet dedicated a landmark exhibition at Galerie Garnier to his residence, entitled La Maison, entirely focused on La Baume. This painting stands as a vivid testimony to that project, intertwining the artist’s deep attachment to his home with the expressive power of his pictorial language.
